Maria Jose Marin Triumphs as First Colombian Winner of Augusta Women’s Amateur
Maria Jose Marin has made history by becoming the first Colombian to win the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. The 19-year-old from Cali, Colombia, secured her victory with a remarkable four-stroke advantage at Augusta National Golf Club.
Final Round Performance
Marin started the final day just one stroke behind the leader, Asterisk Talley. It was a thrilling showdown as the leading pair teed off, but Talley’s hopes dwindled following a tough 12th hole. After three successful birdies on the front nine, Talley encountered difficulties, including a quadruple bogey on the par-3 12th hole. This blow dropped her to 9 under, making a comeback nearly impossible.
In contrast, Marin exhibited consistency and skill. She reeled off five birdies, offsetting an early bogey to finish with a score of 4-under 68 in the final round, bringing her overall score to 14 under. This achievement marks the lowest total in the history of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.
Strategic Changes
One of Marin’s strategic advantages was her choice to hire a caddie from Augusta National. While other contenders stuck with familiar faces, Marin’s decision to seek expert assistance paid off. Last year, her father caddied for her, but this time, she sought guidance to navigate the challenging course effectively.
Historical Significance
This victory holds great significance for Marin. “It means the world to me,” she expressed after clinching the title. In addition to her historic win, she was the only player in the tournament to shoot in the 60s for all three rounds.
Previous Tournament Performance
This win did not come easily. Marin’s prior performances in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur include:
- 2023: T-14 finish
- 2024: T-30 finish
- 2025: Missed the cut
Over the last year, Marin has showcased her talent, becoming the third NCAA individual champion from the University of Arkansas. She joins other NCAA champions who have triumphed at Augusta, including Jennifer Kupcho in 2019 and Rose Zhang in 2023.
Runner-Up and Other Highlights
Stanford sophomore Andrea Revuelta finished in second place, scoring 10 under after an impressive final round of 4-under 68. Revuelta accumulated six birdies during the day, including a near-ace on the challenging 12th hole. Following her was Oh Soomin from Korea, who finished third at 9 under with a clean scorecard and a final round of 4-under 68.
Talley, the tournament’s early frontrunner, ended in a tie for fourth with a total score of 8 under, concluding her final day with a 3-over 75.
Maria Jose Marin’s triumph at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur not only marks a personal achievement but also celebrates Colombia’s rising presence in women’s golf.
