Jorge Polanco’s Achilles Injury Sidelines Him from Mets Lineup

Jorge Polanco has been hampered by left Achilles tendon trouble that has repeatedly sidelined him from the Mets lineup. Manager Carlos Mendoza said the issue flared again on Thursday. Polanco was removed from Friday’s starting lineup after showing recent progress.

Polanco has served as the designated hitter since Sunday. This was the second absence from the starting nine in four games. Mendoza described the condition as tendonitis and called the situation day-to-day.

First base rotation

Brett Baty started at first base on Friday. Mark Vientos and Jared Young have also filled the position. Mendoza praised Vientos’ growth at first base.

The manager noted Vientos is improving both in fielding and in receiving throws. One play resulted in an error by David Peterson. Mendoza called that mistake part of the learning curve.

Polanco’s movement and status

Mendoza said Polanco looked comfortable moving on Thursday night. Polanco has not played first base since last Saturday. The team will monitor his recovery closely.

Rookie outfield assignment

Carson Benge made his first career start in right field at Oracle Park. He went 0-for-4 with one RBI. Benge worked with outfield coach Gilbert Gomez to learn the park’s unique angles before the game.

Team pitching metrics

The Mets entered play with 71 strikeouts by their pitchers. That ranked sixth in MLB and second in the National League. New York’s staff ERA stood at 3.02, sixth in MLB and tied for fifth in the NL.

The comments from Mendoza came before New York’s 10-3 win over San Francisco. The club will continue to manage Polanco’s workload while monitoring the Achilles issue.
