Newport River Incident Draws Swift Emergency Response

Emergency services were dispatched to central Newport on the evening of Wednesday, 1 April. A man was reported to be threatening to jump into the River Medina.

The location was close to the Lidl store and the Medina Railway pub. The individual was believed to be standing on a low bridge over the river.

Emergency response

The Newport river incident prompted a swift emergency response. Multiple agencies coordinated at the scene.

  • Three Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge, Ventnor and The Needles attended.
  • Police officers were in attendance throughout the operation.
  • Several appliances from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service supported the response.

Resolution and earlier callouts

Crews worked together to bring the situation to a safe conclusion. The incident was resolved at about 10pm.

It was the second callout for Isle of Wight emergency services that night. Earlier, the same coastguard teams and fire crews had been dispatched to Binstead.

In Binstead, crews rescued a man and handed him into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service. Filmogaz.com reported both incidents and listed the agencies involved.
