The April 2026 Pink Moon dazzled stargazers around the globe with vivid views and memorable photo opportunities. It rose on the night of April 1, just hours before NASA’s Artemis 2 mission began its crewed lunar flight.
Artemis 2 and the moonrise
Artemis 2 launched four astronauts on an approximately ten-day journey to the far side of the moon. The crew included Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen.
Commander Wiseman told ground control that the crew saw a striking moonrise shortly after the intense ascent. The astronauts were settling into microgravity in low-Earth orbit as the full moon climbed into view.

- Josh Dury used a 600mm telephoto in the pre-dawn hours of April 2. He framed the full moon low above three crosses on Brent Knoll in Somerset, U.K.
- Dury noted the timing tied to the paschal full moon and the calendar, with Easter falling on April 5 this year.
- Gregg Newton photographed the moon rising over the Kennedy Space Center on April 1. The lunar disk appeared above the Artemis 2 countdown clock at the launch site.

- Gary Hershorn shot the moon as it slipped behind the spire of the Empire State Building. He photographed the scene from Union City, New Jersey.
- Kirill Kudryavtsev recorded a yellow full moon over Frankfurt, Germany. A Boeing 777 crossed the lower edge of the lunar disk in his frame.
- In another of his images, Kudryavtsev placed a church weathervane in silhouette against the glowing moon. The foreground element added striking contrast.
- Luis Robayo photographed the lunar disk above an obelisk in Buenos Aires. An image of the Artemis 2 Space Launch System rocket was projected onto the monument that night.
- Megan Briggs captured a detailed view from Miami on March 31, the night before full phase. Her photo revealed dark lunar maria and bright streaks from ancient impacts.
- J. David Ake imaged the moon hovering above the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Thin clouds streaked across the lunar surface in his shot.
