Severe Weather Alert in Chicagoland: Tornado and Hail Risks Loom
A strong weather system is affecting Chicago and nearby counties this afternoon. A Severe Weather Alert covers much of Chicagoland.
Current conditions and advisory
Temperatures show a wide north-south contrast across the area. Readings are in the low to mid 70s to the south. The city sits in the 50s while locations north are near the low 40s.
Scattered rain is falling and a few rumbles of thunder are possible. Visibility is reduced by fog, and winds are already gusting near 30 to 35 mph.
A wind advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Non-thunderstorm gusts could reach 45 to 50 mph during that time.
Severe storm threat this afternoon and evening
The primary window for strong storms runs roughly from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. All hazards are possible during this period.
This includes damaging hail, destructive wind, and tornadoes. Hail risks loom in some of the stronger cells.
Residents should have multiple ways to receive warnings. The threat could affect the evening commute.
Secure loose outdoor items and plan alternate routes if possible.
