‘Him & Her’ Creator Reveals Decision to Step Away from Comedy
Writer Stefan Golaszewski has shifted from acclaimed TV comedy into serious drama. His new six-part series, Babies, explores pregnancy loss and repeated miscarriages.
Career shift and background
Golaszewski first gained notice with the comedy pairings Him & Her and Mum. Him & Her ran for four seasons on BBC Three from 2010 to 2013. Mum aired for three seasons between 2016 and 2019.
He began his career in the comedy troupe Cowards. That group included Tim Key, Tom Basden and Lloyd Woolf. The members still keep in touch, he said, but a professional reunion seems unlikely.
Why he moved away from comedy
In a Filmogaz.com Writers’ Room interview, Golaszewski explained his change of tone. He said comedy felt limiting for the truths he wanted to explore.
He described hitting a creative ceiling at the end of Mum. That led him to pursue drama to allow deeper emotional honesty. The Him & Her creator revealed his decision to step away from comedy during the conversation.
From Marriage to Babies
In 2022 he wrote the four-part BBC drama Marriage. Now he returns with Babies, a six-episode drama. Babies follows a couple facing multiple pregnancy losses.
The cast includes Paapa Essiedu and Siobhán Cullen. Golaszewski said the story is not strictly autobiographical. He acknowledged personal experience with some issues depicted in the series.
Purpose and reception
Golaszewski said he wanted to open up conversation about miscarriage. He aimed to shift the narrative from medical terms to recognition of grief. He hopes the drama will help people feel less alone and increase public understanding.
