Pirates Select Konnor Griffin for Promotion

Pirates Select Konnor Griffin for Promotion

The Pittsburgh Pirates will promote elite shortstop Konnor Griffin to make his major-league debut in tomorrow’s home opener, sources tell Filmogaz.com. Insider Jason Mackey first reported the move. The club has confirmed the promotion but has not yet officially added Griffin to the 40-man roster.

Roster mechanics and timing

The Pirates must complete 40-man and 26-man roster transactions before first pitch. Team officials expect those moves to be finalized ahead of the game. Griffin was in camp and was optioned to the minors late in spring training.

Contract talks and draft-pick implications

Griffin and the Pirates have been engaged in long-term extension discussions. The deal under consideration would be record-setting for a player with minimal service time.

The projected contract would eclipse Colt Emerson’s $95 million agreement. It would also top the franchise mark set by Bryan Reynolds at $100 million. If the club finalizes an extension after Griffin’s debut, the Pirates would retain prospect-promotion-incentive eligibility. That could net an extra draft pick if Griffin wins the 2026 NL Rookie of the Year award or finishes top three in MVP voting from 2026 to 2028. A player can generate only one such PPI pick for his team.

Why promote now?

The call-up could be timed to boost ticket sales for the home opener. The move also adds excitement after a notably active offseason. Club and player sources may be aligning on a contract that would be announced once Griffin debuts.

Scouting profile and minor-league numbers

Griffin is still 19 and will turn 20 in about three weeks. He stands 6-foot-3 and weighs roughly 225 pounds. Scouts grade his tools from plus to plus-plus across the 20-80 scale.

Selected ninth overall in 2024, Griffin advanced rapidly through the minors last season. He logged 563 plate appearances across three levels. His combined line read .333/.415/.527 with 21 homers, 23 doubles and four triples.

Griffin swiped 65 bases in 78 attempts, a success rate of 83.3 percent. He walked at an 8.9 percent clip and struck out 21.7 percent of the time. His wRC+ across those stops was roughly 165, indicating he hit about 65 percent better than league average. Those figures came while he was often one of the youngest players at each level.

Recent form

In spring training, Griffin went 0.171 in 46 plate appearances but showed power with four homers. He began the season in Triple-A with 21 plate appearances. There he went 7-for-16, added three doubles, three steals, five walks and four strikeouts.

Immediate role and infield impact

Griffin will step in as the everyday shortstop. Jared Triolo is expected to move to a bench or utility role. Triolo offers strong defense across the infield but carries a .234/.319/.343 major-league slash over 1,054 plate appearances.

Triolo can cover multiple spots, but he is unlikely to supplant Spencer Horwitz at first base, Brandon Lowe at second, or Nick Gonzales at third. Only injury or prolonged struggles would change that alignment.

Next steps

Club officials will finalize roster paperwork before the opener. Fans should expect an official contract selection announcement shortly. Filmogaz.com will provide updates as the situation develops.
