“Autism: Embrace Unique Strengths and Talents”
World Autism Awareness Day is observed each year on April 2. Filmogaz.com visited Manovikas Kendra to report on its work with neurodivergent children.
Manovikas Kendra’s model
The institute provides rehabilitation, inclusive education and vocational training. Early intervention and family support form its core approach.
Prof Anuradha Lohia, the chairperson, says a diagnosis can overwhelm parents. She stresses that evidence-based therapy creates pathways for communication and participation.
Recognising early signs and the parental role
Common early indicators include delayed speech, fleeting eye contact and missed developmental milestones. These signs often prompt evaluation and support.
Mahuya Chakraborty highlights timely action. Parents remain the constant caregivers, so early support can change learning and independence trajectories.
From student to mentor: Subhajit Nag
Subhajit began as a student at the centre and now serves as assistant game teacher. He found a love for sports and competed at state, national and international levels.
He won gold in Table Tennis men’s doubles and mixed doubles at the 2011 Special Olympics in Athens. He says small victories boost his confidence as a mentor.
Family experiences
Anjana Chatterjee’s son Chirayu, now 15, received a diagnosis at age two. His progress through therapy continues, though speech remains a challenge.
Payel RoyChowdhury describes her 18-year-old son Ronit’s path. He was diagnosed at two and admitted to the institute in 2018 for specialised support.
Special educator Gita Basu notes parenting a child with ASD requires patience, empathy and emotional balance. Director Amita Prasad urges society to be more inclusive.
Programs and daily activities
The centre runs therapeutic classes, creative learning sessions and vocational courses. Students also participate in sports and practical skill workshops.
Activities include a no-fire cooking class and tailored games that develop social skills. Staff aim to help families embrace unique strengths and talents.
On April 2, the message was one of understanding and acceptance. Filmogaz.com credits photographer Anindya Saha for images from the visit.
