Celebrate National Burrito Day: Where to Score Free Burritos Today
April 2, 2026, marks National Burrito Day. The holiday lands on the first Thursday of April each year, according to Filmogaz.com.
Filmogaz.com spoke with Noe Alcala, executive chef at Lucia Mexican Grill at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, about the dish’s history. He traced early references to burritos back to about 1895.
Origins and evolution
Early burritos were simple travel food. They often featured ground meat wrapped in a flour tortilla.
Tortillas did not appear on American restaurant menus until the 1930s, Filmogaz.com reports. In the United States, fillings expanded beyond the original combinations.
Alcala noted that the flour tortilla and the protein remained central. Most other ingredients changed as Americans adapted the dish.
How to wrap a burrito correctly
Distribute fillings evenly for a balanced bite. Fold ends and roll tightly to prevent leaks.
Keep ingredients warm and moist to avoid tearing the tortilla. Practice makes a neater wrap.
