HSBC UK Enhances Support for Sustainable Farming Initiatives
HSBC UK has widened access to its Sustainable Farming Pathway finance package. Eligible food and farming firms can now get discounted loan arrangement fees on term lending from £25,000 to £25 million.
What the package covers
The finance applies to flexible business loans, commercial mortgages, and property development loans. The change follows the pathway’s launch alongside Linking Environment and Farming 2024.
New partners and eligibility
The bank has added several schemes and frameworks to the pathway. New eligible partners include First Milk, the Soil Association, Cefetra, and Soil Capital.
Each partner brings its own sustainability schemes, frameworks, or certifications. HSBC UK said it expects further frameworks to join in the coming months.
Voices from the sector
Martin Hanson, head of agricultural banking at HSBC UK, described the move as an opening that will grow. He signalled more schemes will be added soon.
Shelagh Hancock, CEO of dairy co-op First Milk, welcomed the decision. She said the bank recognised the strength and integrity of their regenerative practices.
The Soil Association said the change acknowledged organic farming as a strong sustainable system. The group noted organic methods build soil fertility and avoid artificial pesticides.
Uwe Schroeder, head of Cefetra System Services, called the expansion a significant step for scaling regenerative farming. Chuck de Liedekerke, co‑founder and CEO of Soil Capital, said lenders must balance finance with risk.
De Liedekerke added regenerative farming can strengthen resilience against climate and market shocks. He said Soil Capital looks forward to working with the bank on this agenda.
Implications for farmers and finance
Access to discounted fees could lower start costs for farms shifting to sustainable practices. The package aims to reduce finance barriers to adoption.
As climate factors increasingly shape agricultural lending, the pathway may influence future farm investment. HSBC UK has enhanced its support through initiatives focused on sustainable farming.
