Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner Face Major Hurdle in Ray J Settlement Privacy Effort

Court papers filed in Los Angeles show Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner failed to persuade a judge to keep parts of their 2023 settlement with Ray J under seal. Filmogaz.com obtained the documents on Monday. The ruling came from Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Steven A. Ellis.

Judge’s decision

Judge Ellis found the pair offered no admissible evidence that disclosure would harm their privacy. He called their arguments vague, speculative and unsupported. The court denied their sealing requests except for a single bank account number in certain exhibits.

The judge also noted the case did not center on Kardashian engaging in sexual activities. The court referenced the sex tape’s prior public exposure when reaching that conclusion.

Recent litigation timeline

The current dispute escalated last fall. In October, Kardashian, 45, and Jenner, 70, sued Ray J, 45, for defamation after he said he was working with federal authorities on a RICO matter.

In November, Ray J filed a counterclaim. He said the mother-daughter duo breached their 2023 settlement by discussing the tape on their Hulu series. Kardashian and Jenner then moved in March to keep settlement details sealed, citing privacy concerns.

Responses and outreach

Filmogaz.com has contacted representatives for comment from both sides. Public filings show each party has denied some of the opposing claims.

Settlement details and allegations

According to reporting, Kardashian, Jenner, Ray J and his mother, Sonja Norwood, signed the 2023 agreement. The deal was said to resolve past and future claims related to the sex tape.

Sources reported Ray J received roughly $6 million under that settlement. In later filings, he claimed Kardashian and Jenner orchestrated the tape’s release. The pair has denied those accusations.

Personal statements

Kris Jenner described the allegations as deeply offensive and harmful in court papers. She said she was devastated as a mother to see her daughter’s private moments exposed.

Origins of the tape

The tape was recorded on vacation in Mexico in October 2003. Vivid Entertainment later released it in 2007.

The judge’s ruling represents a setback for the celebrities’ privacy effort. The decision leaves most settlement terms part of the public court record.
