Capcom has released Breath of Fire IV on Steam. The title is available for $9.99.

Early buyers can grab the game for $4.99 with a 50% launch discount. The re-release was co-developed with GOG.

Plot setup

The game opens on two floating continents separated by a vast swamp. For generations, no travel linked the regions.

When historic contact finally occurred, war erupted between the Fou Empire and the Eastern Alliance. After a costly conflict, both sides agreed to an armistice.

One year after peace, Princess Elena disappears while visiting battlefields. Her sister, Princess Nina, sets out alone to find her.

Key characters

  • Ryu — Found unconscious in an eastern desert town. He wields a Dragon’s Eye that grants dragon transformation and summoning.
  • Nina — Princess of Wyndia and a member of the Fae tribe. She uses healing magic and searches for her sister Elena.
  • Scias — Quiet mercenary who served during the war. He serves as the party’s watcher and performs a powerful double sword attack.
  • Cray — Young leader of the Woren tribe. He joins Nina to look for Elena, his childhood friend, and offers strong offense and defense.
  • Ershin — A warrior in fully sealed armor. She appears from a cursed area and hides her face and past.
  • Ursula — A leader from the Fou Empire who came east seeking dragons. She was raised in the military and excels with magic and weapons.
  • Fou-Lu — The ancient emperor who unified the western continent. He predicted his resurrection and retains mystic dignity.

Technical upgrades and fixes

This re-release includes both English and Japanese localizations. The DirectX renderer has been improved for modern systems.

  • New rendering options such as windowed mode and integer scaling.
  • Vertical synchronization, gamma correction, and anti-aliasing controls.
  • Restored environmental sounds and an improved audio engine.
  • Better keyboard and mouse support for PC players.
  • Warehouse and Crane minigames have been refined.
  • F9 exit screen improved; pressing F9 returns to the main menu or quits.
  • All known crashes in battles and combos have been fixed.
