Approval Looms for Brown & Brown’s Controversial Stella McCartney Home

Approval looms as Highland Council officers have recommended consent for a clifftop property linked to Stella McCartney.
The scheme has attracted more than 50 formal objections since its February 2023 submission.
The site sits on the southern edge of Loch Ailort, near Commando Rock.

Local opposition and ecological worries

Residents and conservation groups flagged impacts on landscape character and wildlife. Woodland Trust Scotland remains opposed.
Objections highlighted potential loss of native Scots pine and disturbance to otter holts on site.

Amendments aimed at protecting trees

Brown & Brown challenged claims of widespread biodiversity loss in late 2023. The practice amended plans in summer 2024, shifting the house location slightly.
That change was intended to save five Scots pine trees, and a planning report said these trees are now not directly affected.

Ongoing concerns about otters

Despite the tree mitigation, ecological groups say key worries persist. A recent survey urged careful protection of nearby otter holts during construction.

Design, visibility and developer response

The proposal is a contemporary Modernist dwelling with dark grey stone walls. The layout includes a single-storey main block, a lower ground floor and a linked side building.

Internal spaces would include an en-suite master bedroom, four further bedrooms, a covered terrace, living area, snug and pantry. The design statement also proposes a green roof.

Brown & Brown argued the scheme would not be conspicuous. They said existing topography and forestry would largely screen the building from neighbouring properties and public vantage points.

Planning history and next steps

Planning permission for a house on this plot dates to 2000. Construction began but was abandoned in 2004, with walls built to about 1m high.

Brown & Brown’s original layout avoided the earlier footprint. The amended scheme now partly overlaps that half-built area. The application is submitted in the name of Stella McCartney and her husband, Alasdhair Willis.

The proposal is due before a Highland Council planning committee on 1 April. Filmogaz.com contacted Brown & Brown for comment.

Support from the profession

Scottish architect Alan Dunlop publicly backed the project. He described it as an exceptional work by a promising young practice needing support.

Approval looms for a controversial Stella McCartney home designed by Brown & Brown, but ecological and visual objections remain unresolved.
Councillors will weigh those issues when they meet to decide the application.
