Tragedy Overshadows Azteca Reopening as Mexico Draws with Ronaldo-less Portugal

A tragic incident cast a shadow over the Estadio Azteca reopening on a night Mexico drew 0-0 with a Ronaldo-less Portugal. The match was meant as a celebratory relaunch. Instead, officials confirmed the death of a fan shortly before kickoff.

Fatal incident during relaunch

Mexico City’s Office of Citizen Security said the supporter fell from the second level of the box seating. Emergency services attended, and authorities announced the death before the friendly began.

The stadium had been closed since May 2024 for extensive renovations. Work continued in parts of the concourse, and long queues formed at outer security gates.

Reopening context and VIP attendance

The venue, sometimes referred to by its corporate name Estadio Banorte, marked its 60th year. Organizers installed new pyrotechnics for the pre-match show.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino attended the event. The match served as a preview ahead of five World Cup games the stadium will host this summer, including the opener between cohost Mexico and South Africa.

Mexico coped with a long injury list

Coach Javier Aguirre faced major absences across the squad. Key players sidelined included Edson Álvarez, Gilberto Mora, Jesús Orozco, Rodrigo Huescas and Santiago Giménez.

Recent injuries also hit the goalkeeper and midfield lines. Club América’s Luis Malagón ruptured his Achilles, and Marcel Ruiz suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

New faces and first-half promise

Aguirre handed a debut to Spain-born midfielder Álvaro Fidalgo. Brian Gutiérrez and Obed Vargas also featured, while Chivas’ Raúl Rangel started in goal.

The first half showed encouraging movement and cohesion. Fidalgo found space between the lines, and Gutiérrez combined well with Raúl Jiménez and Roberto Alvarado.

Portugal without Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo missed the friendly through injury. Manager Roberto Martínez has publicly maintained Ronaldo remains his top-choice striker.

Gonçalo Ramos started in a front three with Chico Conceição and João Félix. Ramos had a clear chance from Bruno Fernandes’ cutback but sent his shot wide.

What the result means

The game finished 0-0 and yielded few firm conclusions about either side. Second-half substitutions disrupted Mexico’s early rhythm.

For Portugal, the match did little to resolve the debate over their attack without Ronaldo. For Mexico, the night offered mixed optimism, tempered by tragedy.
