Driver Charged After Car Strikes Pedestrians in Derby City Centre

A man has been charged after a car mounted the pavement and struck pedestrians in Derby. The collision happened outside a pub on Friar Gate at about 9.30pm on Saturday.

Suspect and charges

Derbyshire Police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Sandhu Ponnachan. He was arrested shortly after the collision and is in custody.

  • One count of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent
  • One count of dangerous driving
  • One count of possession of a bladed article

Ponnachan lives in the Alvaston area and is originally from India. He is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Victims and injuries

Seven people were injured in the incident. Their ages ranged from 36 to 52.

Early reports suggested some injuries were serious. Police later described the injuries as not life-threatening, and four people have been discharged from hospital.

Investigation and police response

Counter-terrorism officers were initially involved in the inquiry. Derbyshire Police said that did not indicate the incident was being treated as terrorism.

Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred said the charge may offer reassurance to the community. She reiterated an appeal for witnesses and information as the investigation continues.

CCTV footage captured the vehicle outside the pub. Derbyshire Police asked anyone with relevant footage to come forward.
