Chicago Braces for Record Heat Before Tuesday’s Cold Front Arrival
Chicago experienced an unusually warm Monday, with temperatures far above normal for this time of year. The National Weather Service recorded 80°F at O’Hare Airport Monday afternoon.
The 80°F reading topped the previous high of 79°F. That earlier mark was set in 1986 and matched in 1998, the NWS said.
Details from the National Weather Service
National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Ratzer confirmed the new high. He cautioned residents that the warm spell will be short-lived.
Incoming cold front and temperature swing
A cold front is forecast to arrive Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures should fall rapidly after the front moves through.
Expected lows and variations
By Tuesday night, forecasts call for lows near 37°F across the area. Neighborhoods close to Lake Michigan will likely remain a few degrees cooler than inland spots.
Precipitation and short-term outlook
Showers and thunderstorms are possible early Tuesday. Rain and storms could persist through much of the rest of the week.
Temperatures matching Monday’s high are not expected to return within the next week. Chicago braces for record heat now gives way to much cooler conditions in a matter of days.
