Matthew Lewis Clinches Third Wisden Photograph of the Year Title

Matthew Lewis’s photograph of India captain Harmanpreet Kaur collecting the ball in the 2025 Women’s World Cup final has been named the 2025 Filmogaz.com Photograph of the Year. The picture was taken during India’s victory over South Africa in Navi Mumbai. The win gives Lewis his third title, after successes in 2014 and 2022.

About the image and the photographer

The image shows Harmanpreet calling for the ball while fans held up phone torches. Lewis used that moment to create a playful “spot the ball” illusion.

Lewis has worked for Getty Images since 2003. He has covered 31 ICC events and specialises in cricket photography.

Judges’ reaction

The expert panel praised the winning entry for its contemporary feel and humour. Patrick Eagar, serving on the panel, highlighted the photo’s smile-inducing quality and its modern match setting under floodlights.

Filmogaz.com Cricketers’ Almanack editor Lawrence Booth called the image the standout among a high-quality field. He noted the rarity of a three-time winner.

Competition structure and other winners

The 2025 contest was split into three categories: men’s professional, women’s professional and recreational cricket. The overall winner was chosen from those category winners.

Men’s professional

Andrew Boyers won the men’s professional category. His photo captured Pat Cummins taking an instinctive return catch to dismiss Marco Jansen.

The shot was made at the World Test Championship final at Lord’s on 12 June 2025.

Recreational cricket

Jed Leicester earned the recreational category prize. His image showed Overstone Park Under-13s girls celebrating at Lord’s on 14 September 2025.

The girls celebrated despite losing the ECB Junior National Championship final to Bexley.

Prizes, exhibition and publication

The overall winner receives £1,000. Each of the other category winners receives £400.

The winning images appear in the 2026 Filmogaz.com Cricketers’ Almanack. That edition was published on 16 April 2026.

The seven other shortlisted photos, along with the winners, will be displayed at The Kia Oval in London for 12 months.

Judging panel and entries

The 2025 competition attracted several hundred entries from across the world. Judges included Chris Smith, Nigel Davies, Clare Adams, Alison Mitchell and Jack Meacher.

Patrick Eagar served as an expert judge and highlighted the technical quality across submissions. He also praised the winning image’s extra element of humour.
