Ghana Fires Coach Otto Addo Post Four Consecutive Losses Ahead of World Cup
The Ghana Football Association announced Monday that it has parted ways with head coach Otto Addo, effective immediately. The decision arrives 72 days before Ghana’s opening match at the World Cup.
Ghana fires coach Otto Addo following a run of poor results. The GFA gave no details on a replacement or on reasons for the termination.
Circumstances of the dismissal
The announcement was made in a statement posted by the association on Monday. The statement did not name a successor or provide further explanation.
Recent results
The dismissal came after a 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart on Monday. The team had also lost 5-1 in Austria the previous Friday.
Ghana has now lost four friendlies in a row. The move therefore comes post four consecutive losses ahead of World Cup preparations.
Addo’s recent tenure and history
This was Addo’s second spell as head coach. Borussia Dortmund released him from a talent-development role at the end of the season in March 2024.
Addo previously served as interim coach for much of 2022. He led Ghana at the Qatar World Cup, where the team beat South Korea but exited in the group stage.
Playing career and background
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Addo won the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund during his playing days. He also represented Ghana at the 2006 World Cup.
World Cup context and schedule
Ghana qualified for the World Cup for a fifth time. The Black Stars were drawn in Group L with Croatia, England and Panama.
The team’s first match is scheduled for June 17 against Panama in Toronto. The federation faces a short window to appoint a new coach and prepare the squad.
