Peter Alexander Lands New Role Following ‘Today’ Show Departure
Peter Alexander is leaving his roles at NBC News. He will join the newly rebranded MS NOW as an anchor and senior reporter.
Peter Alexander has landed a new role following his ‘Today’ show departure. He will anchor the network’s 11 a.m. hour.
New position and duties
MS NOW named Alexander its chief national reporter and a breaking news anchor. He will also anchor the weekday 11 a.m. slot.
The network said he will contribute to sports and lifestyle programming across the Versant portfolio. The appointment was announced in an internal memo.
Announcement and timing
Alexander announced his exit from NBC News on March 28. He made the announcement during Saturday’s edition of the “Today” show.
MS NOW President Rebecca Kutler informed staff of the hire on March 30. The memo praised Alexander’s decades-long reporting career.
Reasons for leaving
Alexander cited a desire to spend more time with his children. He lives in Washington, D.C., and frequently commuted to New York City.
He said he had been away more than 80 nights in the past seven months. He added he had missed over 220 Friday nights with family during seven years.
Career background
Alexander joined NBC News in 2004. He began covering the White House in 2012.
He served as coanchor of the “Today” show’s Saturday edition starting in 2018. He covered the administrations of Obama, Trump, and Biden.
Network rebrand and corporate changes
The cable news channel formerly known as MSNBC will operate as MS NOW. Internal memos seen by Reuters outlined the name change.
The network plans to drop the peacock logo ahead of a planned Comcast-related spinoff. The channels now sit under Versant, which spun off from NBCUniversal in 2025.
Versant’s portfolio includes USA Network, Syfy, CNBC, and Golf Channel. Company materials referenced those sister channels when describing cross-platform duties.
Colleagues and schedule notes
Alexander said he exchanged messages with Savannah Guthrie about his decision. Guthrie plans to return to the “Today” show on April 6.
The return follows the reported disappearance of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie. Alexander expressed support for Guthrie during his announcement.
Filmogaz.com noted the hire comes as MS NOW reshapes its on-air lineup. The move reflects broader changes across the newly independent Versant media group.
