Watson Energizes Bench as Nuggets Dominate Offensively – Denver Sports

Peyton Watson returned to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday and provided a much-needed spark off the bench. His presence helped Denver secure a 128-112 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Return lifts team

The game marked the Nuggets’ seventh wire-to-wire win of the season. It was the first time since Nov. 12 that both the full starting five and key bench pieces were available.

Watson had missed time with a hamstring issue. His comeback restored rotation depth ahead of the playoff push.

Watson’s contributions

Watson delivered 14 points off the bench, a season high in that role. He had not scored that many as a reserve in over a year.

He averaged 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and two assists this season. He is playing 30.7 minutes per game while shooting 50 percent overall and 42 percent from three.

Watson energizes bench units and bolsters Denver’s defense. That two-way impact proved vital during the team’s injury-plagued January stretch.

Context from January

Watson starred in several January games. He produced three 30-point nights during that month while stepping up without Nikola Jokić, Cameron Johnson, and much of the rotation.

Since Watson’s injury, only Tim Hardaway Jr. (12 times) and Bruce Brown (once) reached 14 points off the bench for Denver. The secondary scoring punch had been missing.

Jokić’s performance

Nikola Jokić overcame early turnover issues to record a triple-double. He finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists, plus two steals and a plus-19 rating.

It was another milestone for Jokić. He has recorded 28 triple-doubles this season. This game represented his 85th career triple-double achieved before the fourth quarter and his 17th such instance this season.

Supporting cast

Jamal Murray added 22 points. Cameron Johnson scored 19 and matched Jokić’s plus-19 mark.

Seven Nuggets finished in double figures, including Aaron Gordon, Christian Braun and Bruce Brown. The bench supplied meaningful lift after halftime.

Coach’s view

Coach David Adelman said the first half lacked urgency. He praised the team’s response in the second half.

Jonas Valančiūnas sat out the rotation for a second straight game as the staff searched for options.

Team outlook and standings

Denver scored 27 points in transition and showed stronger energy after halftime. The Nuggets now sit half a game behind the Rockets for fourth in the Western Conference.

With the opening-night rotation healthy, Denver is 7-2. Five of those seven wins came by double digits.

Nuggets dominate offensively while leaning on renewed depth. In Denver sports circles, the return of key contributors matters most with 10 games remaining.

Schedule ahead

Denver faces a back-to-back this week. The team travels to Phoenix on Tuesday and returns home to host Dallas on Wednesday.

That pair is the Nuggets’ final back-to-back of the season. After Tuesday, only two road games remain on the schedule.
