Tippett Leads Flyers’ Playoff Charge: ‘He Rallied Everyone to Battle’
The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-1 on Thursday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Owen Tippett did not score, but he recorded two assists and drove much of the game’s momentum.
Tippett’s impact
Tippett set up Trevor Zegras’s second-period chance and later fed Christian Dvorak for a goal. He also forced a key turnover by pressuring a Blackhawks defenseman before the second-period tally.
Coach Rick Tocchet said the forward has pushed teammates to compete at a higher level. Tocchet summed up Tippett’s influence with the line: “He Rallied Everyone to Battle.”
Key plays and scoring sequence
The Flyers opened with two quick goals in the first 2½ minutes. Alex Bump scored 48 seconds into the game after a turnover from Spencer Knight to Christian Dvorak.
In the second, Tippett corralled a Jamie Drysdale pass and fed Zegras. Denver Barkey cleaned up the rebound at 5:14. Later at 12:41, Noah Cates finished a breakaway created by Matvei Michkov to make it 4-1.
Just before intermission, Tippett pressured Artyom Levshunov and teamed with Cates to spring Christian Dvorak for a close-range finish. Tippett also created other high-danger chances throughout the night.
Goaltending and team performance
Sam Ersson stopped 25 shots in goal. Since the Olympic break, he is 4-0 with a .931 save percentage and a 1.58 goals-against average over five games.
The Flyers matched a season high with 42 shots. Philadelphia attacked the front of the net and generated most offense from close range.
Context and next steps
The win continued a strong run since the Olympic pause. The Flyers are 6-1-1 in their last eight games and 10-4-1 since the league resumed.
Despite the victory, other clubs gained points. New York and Pittsburgh both picked up two points on Thursday. Philadelphia travels to Detroit on Saturday for what should be another crucial matchup.
