Filming Begins on Donnie Yen’s ‘John Wick’ Spinoff Featuring Caine

Filming begins next month on a Lionsgate-backed John Wick spinoff focused on Caine. Donnie Yen will direct and return as the blind assassin.

Premise and announcement

The story picks up after 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4. Caine emerges freed from his obligations to The High Table.

The project was first revealed at CinemaCon last spring. It will follow the character’s life after the events of Chapter 4.

Cast and production team

Rina Sawayama will reprise her role as Akira opposite Donnie Yen. Yen also serves as an executive producer.

  • Producers: Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.
  • Chad Stahelski produces via 87Eleven Entertainment.
  • Keanu Reeves and John Saunders are attached as producers.

Writers and creative contributors

Mattson Tomlin penned the screenplay. His recent credits include The Batman Part II and the BRZRKR adaptation.

Michael McGrale is credited as co-writer on the script.

Donnie Yen’s role and goals

Yen will both direct and star. He has described Caine as a character shaped by love, responsibility, and sacrifice.

He says the film is a chance to push the action genre. Yen aims to fuse martial arts with fresh emotional depth and visual language.

Yen’s background and credits

Yen was born in Guangzhou and raised in Boston. He is known for Ip Man, Flash Point, and Hero.

His directed work includes Legend of the Wolf, Ballistic Kiss, Shanghai Affairs, Protégé de la Rose Noire, Sakra, and The Prosecutor. The Prosecutor earned a 94% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Franchise and box office context

John Wick: Chapter 4 remains the franchise’s top earner, with more than $447 million worldwide. Fans showed strong interest in Caine after that film.

Yen has also appeared in major international releases, including the $1 billion-plus grossing Star Wars: Rogue One, xXx: Return of Xander Cage, and Disney’s Mulan.

Studio perspective

Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said interest in Caine made the character a natural next chapter. Lionsgate called the partnership with Yen strategically important.

The studio highlighted Yen’s vision and his ability to bring a distinctive filmmaking approach to the franchise.

Filmogaz.com will monitor production and report further updates as filming progresses.
