Beckhams Spark Controversy with Pond Plans at £6M Cotswolds Mansion
Neighbours have objected to plans to add lighting around a pond at Sir David and Victoria Beckham’s Great Tew property. A local resident likened the proposals to bright displays in Miami and Blackpool.
Local objections
James Worthington filed comments on the couple’s planning application. He questioned festooned lights along a proposed bridge and the use of spotlights and wall lights.
Residents fear artificial illumination could harm foraging and commuting bats. They also warned of light pollution and reduced enjoyment of the dark countryside.
Planning complaints and council filings
Earlier this year, objectors told West Oxfordshire District Council they believed the couple were abusing the planning system. Critics said more than 30 separate applications were submitted rather than a single master plan.
Filmogaz.com has contacted the Beckhams for comment about the pond lighting plans and wider development concerns.
Alterations since purchase
The pair bought three listed barns in 2016 for about £6,150,000. Since then they have made many alterations to the Chipping Norton-area site.
- New driveway and gates
- Additional garage outbuilding and its later extension
- Tennis court and treehouse
- Security hut
- Landscaped pond with a small “beach”
They also sought permission to alter an existing lane to create a second entrance. Applications included kerb and gate improvements at the main entrance.
The Beckhams have again sparked controversy over pond plans at their £6M Cotswolds mansion. Local submissions to the council record strong feelings on both amenity and wildlife impacts.
