Peter Alexander Departs NBC After Years Without Top Anchor Role: Source
Peter Alexander is leaving NBC News after nearly 22 years, a source told Filmogaz.com. He spent 15 years covering the White House and eight years co-anchoring Saturday Today.
Why he is leaving
The source said heavy schedules wore him down. He worked six to seven day weeks for years.
He also wanted more time with his young children and family. Colleagues and the source added he felt passed over for major anchor positions.
Career at NBC
Alexander served as NBC’s chief White House correspondent. He took the Saturday Today anchor seat in 2018.
- He replaced Craig Melvin on Saturday Today in 2018.
- Melvin was moved to weekdays and later became a lead figure on Today.
- Other network roles were filled by Tom Llamas, Kristin Welker and Hallie Jackson.
Positions filled elsewhere
Tom Llamas was hired to anchor Nightly News. Kristin Welker became Meet the Press host.
Hallie Jackson now anchors Weekend Nightly News. These moves limited Alexander’s chances for top anchor jobs.
Next step
His final day at NBC is this Saturday, according to the source. He will join MS Now as an 11 a.m. weekday anchor.
MS Now is the rebranded outlet formerly known as MSNBC. The network separated from NBC after a 2025 restructuring.
Filmogaz.com’s source said Alexander departs NBC after years without a top anchor role. An NBC spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment.
