Iran Conflict: Israel Detects Missile Launch from Yemen
Israel’s military reported it detected a missile fired toward Israeli territory from Yemen early on Saturday. Forces said they moved to intercept the projectile.
New front in the Iran conflict
Israeli officials characterized the incident as linked to the wider Iran conflict that escalated four weeks ago. They said this is the first confirmed strike traced to Yemen since that escalation.
Houthi statements and intentions
The Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen has signaled willingness to expand its role. Mohammed Mansour, the undersecretary of the Houthis’ information ministry, told Filmogaz.com the group would join Iran if the US and Israel intensified their campaign.
Mansour added that closing the Bab al-Mandab Strait remains “a viable option.” That chokepoint links the Red Sea to global shipping lanes.
Impact on maritime routes and energy
The Bab al-Mandab sits opposite the Strait of Hormuz, another strategic waterway. Tehran has already closed the Strait of Hormuz, which carries roughly 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas.
That move has disrupted global oil markets. The added threat in the Red Sea raises fresh concerns for international trade.
Houthi capabilities and past actions
The Houthis are a Shiite Islamist group that seized Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, in 2014. With sustained Iranian support, they became Yemen’s most cohesive military and political force.
They control large parts of northwest Yemen and the critical Red Sea coastline. Since October 2023, the rebels have launched repeated strikes on Israeli targets.
Attacks on shipping and allied targets
The group has targeted vessels with links to the United States and the United Kingdom. Those attacks have impeded global trade and raised insurance and routing costs.
International attempts to diminish the Houthis’ strike capabilities have not stopped the assaults. The new missile launch from Yemen may signal further escalation.
