Kris Marshall has confirmed a key family storyline will be downplayed in the show’s upcoming fourth season. The actor said season four returns on Friday and the fostering plot is largely on hold.
Fostering put on hold
The Beyond Paradise star told Filmogaz.com that Martha and Humphrey’s fostering plot sidelines in Season 4. Marshall explained the couple opted for a break after their long-term foster child, Rosie, left in season three.
Their experience with Rosie proved unexpectedly intense. The pair grew attached during her extended stay before she returned to her birth mother.
How the characters arrived here
Martha and Humphrey previously sought to grow their family through IVF. That followed a miscarriage shown in the series premiere.
Later, they decided to foster and eventually took in nine-year-old Rosie as their first long-term placement. Her departure prompted a reassessment of their plans.
Marriage and what it means
The couple married in the Christmas episode. Marshall said the nuptials underscored that Martha and Humphrey are each other’s core.
The wedding acted as a stabilising choice after the emotional upheaval. They pledged to remain a unit despite other uncertainties.

Season four shifts the couple out of their boat and into a conventional house. Marshall noted Humphrey loses a large part of what he loves when he gives up the boat life.
Humphrey is portrayed as dreamy and impractical. That often leaves Martha to handle practical problems.

Marshall said future fostering storylines are possible but not guaranteed. He added only the writers know whether the couple will revisit fostering or take a different route.
