Roy Keane’s Mother, Marie Keane, Passes Away at 79
Marie Keane, the mother of former Ireland and Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane, has died aged 79. She passed in St. Anne’s Ward at Marymount University Hospital and Hospice.

The death notice on RIP.ie said she was predeceased by her husband, Maurice “Mossie” Keane, and her brother Pat. She is survived by her children Denis, Johnson, Hilary, Roy and Pat.
Roy Keane has often cited his parents’ influence on his life and career. He has described his mother as the “only boss I listen to.”
Care and funeral arrangements
The RIP.ie announcement thanked the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Anne’s Ward for their care. It said Marie died surrounded by the hospital and hospice team.
Visitation will be held at O’Connor Bros Funeral Home at North Gate Bridge on Monday from 6pm. The requiem mass is scheduled for Tuesday at 11am in the Church of the Resurrection, Farranree.
Life in Cork and influence on Roy
Marie married Maurice in 1963 at the Church of the Resurrection in Farranree. The couple raised their family in Mayfield before moving to Rathpeacon in the 1990s.
Roy Keane ensured his parents could attend his matches when he played with Nottingham Forest and Manchester United. The family later lived in a house Roy bought for them in Rathpeacon.
Memories and anecdotes
In his autobiography, Roy recalled modest childhood circumstances. He said his mother provided bus fare and football boots when needed.
Keane showed emotion on a recent episode of Stick to Football. He spoke about family while sharing career mementoes with Ian Wright, Jill Scott and Gary Neville.
