Ukrainians Deported from USA Headed Straight to the Frontlines
After Donald Trump won a second presidential term, the United States began a wide deportation campaign. Officials said the focus was on the most dangerous criminals, but many without criminal records were removed.
Scope and targets of the operation
The administration presented the effort as a public-safety measure. Independent reporting shows many nonviolent migrants were also deported.
Media reporting and demographics
CNN documented that dozens of Ukrainians were among those returned to Ukraine. Some have already been sent home, and others live in fear of removal.
Mobilization and immediate risks
Ukraine has faced more than four years of war and serious personnel shortages in its armed forces. Under Ukrainian law, men aged 25 to 60 are subject to mobilization.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense says about 2,000,000 people are wanted for evading service. Many of those possibly avoiding draft are believed to be abroad.
Many Ukrainians deported from the USA now face immediate deployment to the frontlines. A plane full of returned men is an obvious target for military recruiters.
Case study: the November flight
In November, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported 45 Ukrainian men on a single flight. The group included a tattoo artist identified as Dundyk.
Dundyk said he was detained in August outside a courthouse before a hearing about alleged driving without a license or insurance. He also said he previously held legal immigration status.
Authorities transported the deportees through Poland to the Ukrainian border. They remained handcuffed until Ukrainian officials accepted them.
Of the 45 men, 24 were listed as wanted for conscription and were sent directly to a recruitment office. The group included U.S.-born Ukrainians who barely speak Ukrainian and others with families in the United States.
