Kelvin Sampson Lauds Houston Cougar’s Impressive Development
The Houston Cougars combine veteran leadership with emerging young talent. Kelvin Sampson has led the program since 2014.
They fell short in last season’s national title game against the Florida Gators. The Gators cut down the nets after the win.
Freshman guard Kingston Flemings set the program freshman scoring record. Emanuel Sharp maintained a regular starting role last season.
Mercy Miller’s rise
Sophomore guard Mercy Miller has drawn particular praise from Sampson. He highlighted Miller’s progress during the 2025-26 season.
Miller scored 13 points against the Arizona Wildcats. That performance came in the Big 12 Tournament final at the T-Mobile Center.
Coach’s assessment
Sampson said Miller has improved more than almost anyone in the program. He added that the improvement was earned through hard work.
The change went beyond physical skills. Miller shifted his practice approach and game mentality in measurable ways.
He became more aware of teammates and defensive schemes. Sampson stressed the importance of five-on-five competence over one-on-one scoring.
Tournament outlook
The No. 2-seeded Cougars open the NCAA Tournament in the Round of 64. They meet the No. 15 Idaho Vandals on Thursday night at 9:10 PM.
The game will be played at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. Houston aims to begin another run toward the national title.
