McTavish Scores, Ducks Defeat Canucks to Extend Pacific Division Lead

The Anaheim Ducks beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-3 in a game decided late in the third period. Key goals by Jonas Granlund and forward McTavish swung momentum back to Anaheim.

Third-period swing

Granlund scored on a power play at 1:01 of the third. The goal came before the second penalty on a 5-on-3 expired.

Anaheim had produced only one shot during that 1:35 5-on-3 sequence which began late in the second period. Granlund finished on a quick rebound from the right hash mark after goalie Lankinen got a glove on the first attempt.

Tie and retake

Drew O’Connor tied the game at 2:22 with his 17th goal of the season. He converted a rebound after goalie Dostal had initially stopped an Evander Kane shot on a 3-on-2 rush.

O’Connor called individual milestones secondary to the team outcome. He said team success matters more than personal totals.

McTavish responded about three minutes later to restore Anaheim’s lead. Troy Terry added an empty-netter with five seconds left to make it 5-3.

Notable performances and records

Defenseman Carlson recorded three assists in the game. At 36 years and 73 days, he became the oldest defenseman in Ducks history to post a three-assist night.

That mark topped the previous record set by Chris Pronger at 34 years and 163 days on March 22, 2009. Carlson also became the oldest Anaheim defenseman to record a multi-assist period, surpassing Scott Niedermayer’s mark from March 31, 2009.

Canucks milestones

J.T. Miller’s team power-play mark was eclipsed in cumulative totals. Elias Pettersson reached 167 career power-play points, moving past Miller’s 165 to ninth in team history.

Pettersson also became the second-fastest player in Canucks history to reach 500 NHL points. Thomas Gradin remains the fastest, reaching the mark in 529 games.

Season implications

The Ducks clinched their first 40-win season since 2017-18. That was the last time Anaheim advanced to the postseason.
