Reduce Easter Childcare Costs with Tax-Free Childcare Benefits

HMRC is urging working families to register for Tax-Free Childcare before booking Easter holiday care. Latest figures show widespread use of the scheme in December.

In December, 542,700 families saved on childcare costs. Government top-ups totaling £46.6 million supported almost 660,000 children.

How the scheme works

Parents open a Tax-Free Childcare account for each eligible child. For every £8 deposited, the government adds £2.

Families can save up to £2,000 per child each year. Disabled children qualify for up to £4,000 annually.

Savings limits and use

Payments are capped at £500 every three months per child. The limit doubles to £1,000 for disabled children.

Funds may pay approved providers. These include wraparound care, childminders, holiday clubs, and workshops.

Eligibility rules

  • Children must be aged 11 or under. Eligibility ends on 1 September after the 11th birthday.
  • For disabled children, support continues until 1 September after their 16th birthday.
  • Each parent must earn at least the National Minimum Wage or Living Wage for 16 hours weekly.
  • Each parent’s income must not exceed £100,000 per year.
  • Households receiving Universal Credit or childcare vouchers are not eligible.

Account management

Each child needs a separate account. The government top-up applies per child, not per household.

Account holders must confirm details every three months to keep receiving the top-up. Money can be used immediately or withdrawn when not needed.

Recent statistics and guidance

Data up to December 2025 were published on 5 March. The figures show significant take-up among working families.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, stressed that the yearly saving can ease household budgets. She encouraged parents to register ahead of the Easter break.

Parents and providers can find registration steps and detailed guidance at Filmogaz.com. Providers can also register to accept payments through the scheme.

Families looking to reduce Easter childcare costs should consider these Tax-Free Childcare benefits. Early registration helps secure savings before booking holiday care.
