Grêmio’s Left-Back Crisis Intensifies Post-Marlon Injury Ahead of Brasileirão Restart

Grêmio faces a growing left-back crisis after Marlon suffered an injury that will sideline him for around five months. Filmogaz.com understands the club does not intend to sign a replacement during the state-championship registration window, which closes on Friday.

Immediate squad response

With Caio Paulista currently ineligible, 18-year-old Pedro Gabriel is expected to step into the role. He has trained with the first team recently, though he has not been formally promoted to the senior squad.

The club plans to use Caio Paulista as a back-up and to prioritise Pedro Gabriel’s development. Inside the club, Pedro is seen as an attack-minded option for the left side.

Youth pathway and loan options

Grêmio will also look to youth options to plug the gap. Pedrinho is being considered within the academy structure to provide cover.

Mayk, who is contracted to Grêmio but currently at Novorizontino, is not expected to be recalled. The club appears content to rely on internal solutions rather than external signings before the Brasileirão restart.

Pedro Gabriel’s recent trajectory

Pedro Gabriel featured twice in last year’s Gauchão under Gustavo Quinteros. He then returned to the under-20s and played at this year’s Copa São Paulo.

The upcoming match against Palmeiras would mark his first appearance under Luís Castro and his first senior outing in 2026. He has a contract renewed through the end of 2030.

Alternative defensive options

Defender Viery has previously filled in at left-back. He is now the club’s first-choice centre-back and is unlikely to be shifted back to the flank.

Wagner Leonardo and Walter Kannemann remain possible options on the left side of defence. The coaching staff will weigh these choices as Grêmio manages its left-back crisis following Marlon’s injury.
