Teenager Receives Life Sentence for Hammer Killing and Online Boasting

A teenager has been handed a life sentence for the fatal attack on his mother. The court ordered a minimum term of 22 years and six months. The case drew attention for the recorded assault and the defendant’s online boasting.

The attack and recorded evidence

The victim was 45-year-old teaching assistant Angela Shellis. Her son, 18-year-old Tristan Roberts, admitted the killing.

The assault began in the family home on Coniston Drive, Prestatyn. A voice recording captured much of the incident and was described at trial as deeply distressing.

Prosecutors said Roberts made a separate voice message on the evening of 23 October. In that recording he said he planned to kill his mother the following night.

Footage showed the pair leaving the house at 3.19am on 24 October. They walked to Coed y Morfa nature reserve, where the fatal blows were delivered with a lump hammer.

Online activity and digital searches

After the killing, the defendant posted messages online that prosecutors said amounted to boasting. His posts on Discord described the attack and contained disturbing details.

Roberts created new accounts after being blocked. He saved messages and screenshots that investigators later recovered.

He also used an AI search engine, Deepseek, to ask how to clean blood and which weapon might be more effective. The interaction included guidance that referenced the relative advantages of a hammer for an inexperienced attacker.

Other digital material

Prosecutors identified additional notes and messages. These included references to bagging a body and plans to cause harm by pushing or choking.

One digital note cited “hatred of women” as a possible motive. Police also found a previous conviction for knife possession on the defendant’s record.

Court hearing and family impact

The sentencing took place at Mold Crown Court. Judge Rhys Rowlands imposed the life term and set the minimum tariff.

Prosecutor Andrew Thomas KC outlined the timeline and the recorded evidence. Defence counsel David Elias KC said the offence occurred shortly after the defendant turned 18 and pointed to his deteriorating mental health.

Members of the victim’s family gave emotional impact statements. Her older son described his mother’s love for her younger child. Her sister conveyed anger, confusion and grief, while also expressing residual care.

The court heard Ms Shellis had sought help for her son. She warned friends and a social worker on 17 October that he had acquired a knife and a hammer, and that she feared for his mental state.

Verdict and sentencing

Roberts pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing. The judge said the method and the fact the victim was her son made the crime particularly brutal.

The sentence reflects the seriousness of the offence and the aggravating online boasting. The teenager receives a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years and six months to serve before parole can be considered.
