Clarke said she felt a sudden, severe headache while at the gym. She collapsed by a toilet and began vomiting violently.

Hospital scans showed a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Doctors diagnosed an arterial rupture, or aneurysm, causing bleeding around the brain.

Immediate surgery and symptoms

Surgeons moved quickly to seal the ruptured aneurysm. Clarke described intense, unbearable pain during the ordeal.

During recovery she experienced aphasia and spoke nonsensically. That symptom resolved within about a week.

Later complications and a second operation

A 2013 follow-up scan showed a growth had doubled in size. Medical teams advised another surgical intervention.

The initial attempt failed, and Clarke suffered a massive bleed. Doctors warned her family that her survival was uncertain.

Surgeons then performed a craniotomy, accessing the brain through the skull. That second operation proved decisive for her recovery.

Recovery and public response

Clarke later reported she had returned to full health. She said she was “at a hundred per cent.”
