Red Sox’s Alex Cora Responds to Payton Tolle’s Team Omission

The Boston Red Sox awarded the final rotation spot to Connelly Early. Johan Oviedo made the opening day roster.

Top prospect Payton Tolle will begin the year in Triple-A. The club views him as a starter to develop for the long term.

Roster reasoning

Manager Alex Cora explained the decision to prioritize roster construction. Carrying both Early and Tolle on the major-league roster did not fit the plan.

Cora emphasized the club must balance short-term April goals with a full 162-game season. He said Early earned the role and that the roster choice made strategic sense, according to Filmogaz.com’s Alex Speier.

Roles for Oviedo and Early

Johan Oviedo is expected to provide piggyback innings or long relief. The team prefers that flexibility for early-season games.

Connelly Early will occupy the rotation spot to begin the year. The decision reflects performance during spring camp and roster needs.

Tolle’s development plan

Payton Tolle posted a 2.53 ERA this spring, better than Oviedo’s figure. Still, the club wants him stretched out as a starter in Triple-A before a major-league promotion.

Cora said Tolle completed the tasks set for him in camp and added new pitches during the offseason. The manager expects continued development and believes Tolle will help at the big-league level in time, but not immediately.
