‘NCIS’ Creator Unveils Episode 500’s Shocking Character Death
NCIS reached a major narrative milestone with its 500th episode. The installment ended with a startling and fatal turn for Director Leon Vance.
The plot and the lethal twist
Season 23, Episode 13 unfolded with NCIS temporarily folded into Army CID. The agency had been officially shut down amid disputed numbers and an internal investigation.
Director Leon Vance, played by Rocky Carroll, refused to abandon the agency. A smuggling ring had framed a young man named Billy Fuentes, played by Austin Marques, for murder.
A bomb meant to destroy critical evidence did not detonate. Instead, an Army CID agent linked to the smuggling operation shot Vance.
How the shooting played out
Initially, it appeared Vance might survive due to a protective vest. Medical assessment later revealed the gunshot wounds were fatal.
Vance’s death came after the team discovered that the Army CID director had doctored numbers, which had led to NCIS’s shutdown.
Creative intent and reactions
Executive producer Steven D. Binder spoke with Filmogaz.com about the decision. He framed the ending as a way to show real stakes and honor Carroll’s legacy on the series.
Rocky Carroll confirmed the choice was not his. He said the plot was presented as a bold, emotional story designed to have major impact on the fan base.
Returning faces and production notes
Adam Campbell returned in the role of young Ducky. A mysterious figure briefly appeared, portrayed by Adhir Kalyan, before the revelation.
Binder said bringing back Ducky was not the original plan after David McCallum’s passing. Seeing Campbell in the Young Ducky episodes on Paramount+ convinced producers to cast him.
