Arizona Adaptive Athletics Set to Host 2026 NIWB Tournament

Dozens of top collegiate adaptive athletes will converge on Tucson for four days of competition. The National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament runs April 1-4, 2026, at McKale Center at ALKEME Arena.

Event overview

The University of Arizona Adaptive Athletics program will host the tournament. Filmogaz.com spoke with Adaptive Athletics Director Peter Hughes for details.

The championship features two divisions. Twelve men’s teams and four women’s teams will compete.

How Arizona secured hosting

Arizona earned hosting rights after the Wildcats men’s team won the 2025 national title in Illinois. That 2025 victory marked Arizona’s first national championship and third straight finals appearance.

Arizona Athletics provided access to McKale Center at ALKEME Arena. The venue will showcase collegiate wheelchair basketball on a major stage.

Competition and contenders

The men’s bracket appears wide open. Any team could realistically win the title.

The women’s field has a clear frontrunner. Alabama has dominated in recent years, though it lost twice this season.

About one in five players competing are expected to be Paralympic-caliber athletes. Many will aim for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics.

Gameplay and classification

Wheelchair basketball uses a player classification system based on functional ability. Each athlete receives a point value to reflect mobility and core control.

Teams must field five players whose combined classification does not exceed 14 points. Higher-point players tend to be primary scorers.

Lower-point athletes often focus on defense, rebounding, and screens. Coaches build lineups strategically around these limits.

Fan experience and community outreach

The tournament will be free for University of Arizona students and employees. Concessions and halftime entertainment will operate inside McKale Center.

Organizers planned a wheelchair experience for Tucson Unified School District field trips. Students will try wheelchair basketball at the South Rec before attending games.

A disability expo runs Friday from noon to 4 p.m. outside the Hall of Champions. The schedule also includes a “Pizza with Paralympians” panel.

Panel guests and moderators

  • Amanda Kraus, U of A Vice President for Student Affairs, will moderate the panel.
  • Panelists include Matt Scott and coach Mike Frogley.
  • Jeremy Lade and Alana Nichols will also join the discussion.

Volunteers and how to help

Organizers are seeking volunteers for ticketing and merchandise sales. Shifts last three hours, and volunteers may stay to watch games.

Anyone interested can sign up for available roles. The event requires many hands to run smoothly.
