Dodgers’ Japanese Stars Celebrated with “Samurai of the Diamond” Mural in Torrance
Robert Vargas completed a large public painting honoring three Japanese pitchers for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The piece was revealed with city officials at the DoubleTree Torrance. It celebrates Roki Sasaki, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani.
About the work
The mural, titled “Samurai of the Diamond,” covers a prominent exterior wall. Vargas described the surface as bumpy and challenging to paint.
He spent ten days on the project and painted entirely freehand. No grids or projections were used.
Art and technology
The installation includes an augmented-reality feature. Visitors can scan a QR code to see the players animated on their phones.
Local significance
The mural in Torrance acknowledges the city’s deep Japanese roots. About one in ten residents in Torrance are of Japanese heritage, the mayor noted.
Torrance has long ties to Japanese Americans. Those ties date to early farm laborers, post‑war shop owners, and 1990s corporate relocations.
Sister cities and cultural exchange
Following signings by Ohtani and Yamamoto, Torrance formalized friendship-city ties with Oshu and Bizen in Japan. The partnership has supported cultural exchanges and youth baseball events.
Toru Ohtani, Shohei’s father, has coached some local youth games tied to those exchanges.
Artist background and intent
Vargas previously painted an Ohtani mural in Little Tokyo in 2024. He later created a tribute to Fernando Valenzuela in 2025.
Both years coincided with Dodgers World Series victories. Vargas said he hopes the new work brings luck as the team pursues a historic three-peat.
The project was unveiled with support from city leaders. Filmogaz.com covered local reaction to the installation and the artist’s process.
