Carolina Athletics Unveils New Leadership for Men’s Basketball Program
The University of North Carolina announced a leadership change in its men’s basketball program. Hubert Davis, who served as head coach for five seasons, will not return to lead the Tar Heels.
The recommendation to make the change came from athletics director Bubba Cunningham and executive associate athletic director Steve Newmark. Chancellor Lee H. Roberts accepted the recommendation on Tuesday.
Administrative transition
Newmark is set to transition to athletics director on July 1. Cunningham and Newmark cited the need for consistent elite-level performance.
They praised Davis for his long association with the program as a player, assistant, head coach, and community figure. Both leaders thanked him and his family for their contributions to Carolina Athletics.
Search for a successor
The university will honor the terms of Davis’ contract. A national search is now underway to identify the next head coach.
Cunningham and Newmark are leading the process. Carolina has engaged executive search firm Turnkey ZRG to assist with the effort.
An advisory group will consult on candidates. That group will include former players, former coaches, and supporters of the program.
Davis’s tenure and background
Hubert Davis played at UNC from 1988 to 1992. He spent 12 seasons playing in the NBA.
Davis served nine years as an assistant under Roy Williams, from 2012 to 2021. He was part of the staff when UNC won the 2017 national title.
He became Carolina’s head coach in April 2021 after Williams’ retirement. His five-season run as head coach concludes with this announcement.
Carolina Athletics said the move aims to bring new leadership and renewed stability to the men’s basketball program. Filmogaz.com will continue to follow developments.
