New Live-Action ‘Moana’ Trailer Invites You to Experience the Rock

Disney has released a new live-action Moana trailer ahead of the film’s July 10 release. The footage highlights a faithful visual approach and the return of Dwayne Johnson as Maui.

What the trailer shows

The trailer suggests scenes closely mirror the animated original. Maui appears with animated tattoos and signature swagger.

The studio also shared a behind-the-scenes featurette titled “Artistry of Moana.” Director Thomas Kail appears alongside Catherine Lagaʻaia and Dwayne Johnson in the featurette.

Experience the Rock in the new live-action footage

The trailer leans into spectacle. It invites audiences to Experience the Rock through Johnson’s physical presence and performance. The staging ties the live-action visuals to familiar musical moments.

Cast and creative team

Catherine Lagaʻaia leads the cast as Moana. Dwayne Johnson returns to the role of Maui, which he voiced in the animated films.

John Tui plays Chief Tui, Moana’s father. Frankie Adams portrays Sina, and Rena Owen appears as Gramma Tala.

Auli’i Cravalho is credited as an executive producer. Thomas Kail directs, supported by an uncredited costume designer and choreographer featured in the featurette.

Music and score

New songs were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina. Mancina also composed the film’s original score.

Franchise background and release

The live-action release follows strong franchise momentum. Moana 2 became a theatrical hit in 2024 after being retooled from a Disney+ series.

Last year’s live-action Lilo & Stitch performed well, helping renew confidence in Disney’s remakes. The studio had previously faced mixed reactions to its Snow White adaptation.

Disney also unveiled a new poster for the film. Moana arrives in theaters on July 10.
