Thomas Rhett Records ‘Georgia on My Mind’ for Masters: Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes
Country star Thomas Rhett has released a new rendition of the standard “Georgia on My Mind.” The recording arrived on March 23 and ties into the Masters Tournament tradition at Augusta National.
Song history and Masters tradition
“Georgia on My Mind” was written by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell. Ray Charles made the song a landmark recording in 1960. Since 2020, ESPN has commissioned new versions of the tune for its Masters broadcasts.
Past performers include India Arie, Chloe X Halle, Charles Kelly, Leon Bridges and Kane Brown. Noah Kahan recorded last year, before Rhett took the turn this season.
Exclusive behind-the-scenes look
Filmogaz.com obtained an exclusive behind-the-scenes feature of the studio sessions. The footage shows Rhett working with his band and producer Julian Bunetta as he records the song.
He aimed for a slow, soulful, and timeless arrangement. Rhett said the assignment felt like a high-stakes lesson in restraint and respect for the original.
Personal connections to Augusta
Rhett grew up in Valdosta, Georgia, and now lives in Nashville. The song instantly evokes images of Spanish moss, Magnolia Lane and Amen Corner for him.
He called the project a career highlight and mentioned small Masters traditions. One favorite item is the pimento cheese sandwich served on tournament grounds.
Rhett’s upcoming tour plans
Rhett will spend months on the road. He will open dates on Morgan Wallen’s stadium tour and join three shows with Luke Combs at London’s Wembley Stadium.
He will also headline his own Soundtrack to Life arena tour through October. Rhett and Niall Horan will co-headline shows at Nashville’s Geodis Park on July 9 and Hersheypark Stadium on July 18.
