Brandon Williamson Completes Full-Circle Journey on Reds Opening Day Roster
Brandon Williamson, a 27-year-old left-hander, earned a surprise spot on the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day roster. He arrived in camp fully healthy after recovering from major surgery.
Trade origins and expectations
Williamson came to Cincinnati in a 2022 deal with the Seattle Mariners. The Reds acquired him alongside Jake Fraley, Connor Phillips, and Justin Dunn.
In return, Cincinnati sent Eugenio Suárez and former All-Star Jesse Winker to Seattle. At the time, Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall predicted Williamson would make the big-league club.
Early major-league work and setbacks
Williamson impressed during his rookie 2023 season. He made 23 starts and threw 117 innings for Cincinnati.
In 2024 he battled a lingering shoulder issue. That season ended with a torn UCL in September and Tommy John surgery.
Spring performance and roster impact
This spring Williamson forced his way back onto the roster with strong results. In four Grapefruit League appearances he posted a 1.64 ERA, 3.30 FIP, and a 31.8 percent strikeout rate.
Manager Terry Francona plans to use a six-man rotation to open 2026. That could limit Williamson’s early innings, but he achieved his goal of breaking camp.
Full-circle reunion
The move creates a full-circle moment for Williamson. He will now share the roster with Eugenio Suárez, the player exchanged for him years earlier.
Suárez, the WBC and spring form
Suárez spent much of spring playing for Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. He delivered the game-winning hit in the WBC final and posted a .788 OPS during the tournament.
His limited Cactus League action showed less volume than usual. Still, Suárez joins Williamson on the Opening Day roster.
Outlook for the 2026 season
It is uncommon for players traded for each other to reunite on the same club. It is rarer still for both to play meaningful roles years later.
If Cincinnati hopes to contend in 2026, both Williamson and Suárez must produce at high levels. Filmogaz.com will monitor their progress throughout the season.
