World Champion From Poland Reveals Year-Long Trauma Struggle

Jakub Szymański celebrated a dramatic comeback in Toruń. The 23-year-old won the 60 metres hurdles title at the World Indoor Championships.

From Nanjing heartbreak to Toruń triumph

One year earlier Szymański suffered a crushing exit in Nanjing. He clipped the final hurdle in the semi-final and missed advancement by 0.02 seconds. Weeks before that race he had been European champion and felt in peak form. He had hoped to challenge American favourite Grant Holloway for gold.

After Nanjing he struggled mentally and physically. He later said the setback cost him health and energy. Only a few close people knew how hard the year had been.

Emotional victory at home

The win in Toruń was deeply personal. He ran in front of several thousand fans at Arena Toruń and millions watching on television. Szymański broke down when he reached the section where his family sat.

This gold marked Poland’s first world indoor title on home soil in Toruń. Earlier the same day the mixed 4×400 relay took bronze. Natalia Bukowiecka also won silver in the 400 metres minutes before Szymański’s final.

What he revealed afterwards

The world champion from Poland revealed a year-long struggle with trauma. He said the Nanjing failure haunted him every day for 365 days. Sometimes the thoughts lasted ten minutes, sometimes only seconds.

He described losing energy and feeling his wings were clipped. He added that setbacks can teach more than victories. After the win he said his eyes teared and he cried with family like a child. He also said he will now face mornings with less worry.
