Ringo Starr and Joe Walsh: 4 Songs Co-Written from 1983 to 2019

Joe Walsh and Ringo Starr first crossed paths during a mid-1970s jam session. Their recorded partnership began in the early 1980s.

After the Eagles split in 1980, Walsh focused on solo work and many collaborations. His collaborators include B.B. King, Lionel Richie, Richard Marx, Sheryl Crow, Diana Ross and Foo Fighters.

Walsh briefly joined Starr’s All-Starr Band in 1989 and has appeared with them intermittently since. He married Marjorie Bach, the sister of Starr’s wife, in 2008.

This article examines four songs co-written by Ringo Starr and Joe Walsh between 1983 and 2019.

Collaborations across decades

“In My Car” (1983) — Old Wave

Walsh produced Starr’s ninth solo album, Old Wave, and took a major creative role. He co-wrote several tracks with Richard Starkey and supplied the solo composition “Be My Baby.”

“Fill in the Blanks” (2010) — Y Not

Starr invited Walsh back for Y Not, his sixteenth studio album. Walsh co-wrote and plays on the album opener, while contributing guitar to other tracks.

The Y Not sessions also feature Paul McCartney. McCartney duets on “Walk with You” and plays bass on “Peace Dream.”

“Bridges” (2015) — Postcards from Paradise

On Starr’s self-produced Postcards from Paradise, Walsh co-wrote the mid-tempo track “Bridges.” The album contains songs by many guest writers.

Contributors on the record include Dave Stewart, Glen Ballard, Steve Lukather, Todd Rundgren and Richard Marx.

“Gotta Get Up to Get Down” (2019) — What’s My Name

Walsh returned to the writer’s chair on Starr’s 2019 album, co-writing the opening song. He is also heard performing a brief rap on the track.

Walsh had played guitar on Starr’s 2017 record Give Me More Love, though he did not have writing credits there. What’s My Name also includes Paul McCartney on a cover of John Lennon’s “Grow Old With Me.”

Ongoing musical and personal ties

The two musicians have maintained a steady creative bond for decades. They attended events together, including a 2010 Hard Rock benefit in Hollywood.

Walsh later played guitar on Starr’s 2025 country album Look Up, appearing on the track “Rosetta.” Their work spans production, writing and touring.
