Firefly Rebooted: Nathan Fillion’s Cult Sci-Fi Returns as Animated Series
The Firefly franchise is moving toward an animated revival titled Firefly: Still Flying. The project promises a direct continuation of the original story. Creator Joss Whedon has given his blessing to the plan.
Creative team and production
20th Century Studios is on board with the revival. Shadowmachine will produce the animation, bringing recent credits like BoJack Horseman and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.
Husband and wife showrunners Tara Butters and Marc Guggenheim will lead the writers’ room. Butters worked on Agent Carter and Dollhouse. Guggenheim’s credits include Arrow and Tales of Arcadia.
Episode details and series approach
The first script is titled “Athenia” and carries episode number 201. That numbering signals a continuation rather than a hard reboot. Shadowmachine has shared early concept art of the characters.
Cast and fan mobilization
Nathan Fillion will front the cast again as Captain Malcolm Reynolds. Other returning actors have publicly supported the campaign.
