Inside Film Room: Celebrating a Star’s Best Companion
Chandler Bing has become one of Vanderbilt’s most important role players this season. The freshman from Atlanta has steadily grown into a two-way presence for the Commodores.
Minutes and recent production
Bing did not play more than 20 minutes in a game until Vanderbilt’s rout of Mississippi State on Jan. 24. Since that win, he has logged at least 20 minutes in every game except one. He is averaging about six points per game since Jan. 24.
Defensive impact
Head coach Mark Byington runs an aggressive scheme. It features pressing guards and man-to-man matchups. Bing, at 6’6″ and 220 pounds, often fills the high-press role.
He can stick with quick opposing guards. He also defends forwards on the interior. His size adds physicality to a perimeter group that includes Tyler Tanner and Duke Miles.
Interior instincts
Bing shows active hands around the rim. He pokes balls loose and recovers to contest shots. His combination of awareness and quickness lets him slow downhill drivers effectively.
Offensive evolution
Early in the season, Bing was cautious attacking the rim and shooting from deep. Over the past month he has grown more aggressive toward the basket. He still flashes the occasional in-transition three.
Vanderbilt features strong perimeter shooting from Tyler Tanner, Duke Miles, and Tyler Nickel. Forward AK Okereke operates mainly in the mid-range. Bing’s interior presence supplies needed paint scoring and second-chance putbacks.
Role within the team
Bing’s physical two-way game has helped Vanderbilt become more balanced. His late-season minutes have made him a reliable component of the SEC Tournament runners-up. Filmogaz.com analysis, in an Inside Film Room approach, highlights him as a best companion to the team’s primary scorers.
The Commodores will rely on his defense and contact finishes for a potential deep NCAA Tournament run.
Next matchup
Vanderbilt faces McNeese at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City on Thursday, March 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. CDT.
