Final Fantasy Composer Nobuo Uematsu Releases Epic Orchestral Fairy Tale Album

Decca Classics has announced Merregnon: Heart of Ice, a new orchestral fairy tale by Nobuo Uematsu. The album will be released worldwide on 19 June 2026.

Best known for his work on Final Fantasy, Nobuo Uematsu has composed his first large-scale work written specifically for the concert hall. The project moves him into a classical setting while keeping his melodic voice.

Recording and narration

The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios. The London Symphony Orchestra provides the performance.

Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander supplies narration. The format draws inspiration from Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf.

Story, characters and creative team

The tale, by Frauke Angel, follows Kjugo, a wooden robot searching for his creator across a frozen world. He confronts the Ice Wind Dancer, whose power has created eternal winter.

Each character receives a distinct musical identity. The approach aims to tell the story through music as much as words.

  • English script: BAFTA-winning duo Ciaran Murtagh and Andrew Barnett Jones
  • Artwork: Tobias Orderud
  • Producer: Thomas Böcker; part of the Merregnon series

The project is designed for families and younger listeners. It intends to introduce new audiences to orchestral music.

After premieres in Germany, the piece will continue its concert life in 2026. A showcase is scheduled at the Philharmonie de Paris on 25 June 2026.
