Arthur Shelby’s Fate Revealed in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man
Arthur Shelby, played by Paul Anderson, is absent from the living cast of the Peaky Blinders film. His character’s fate is a central thread in The Immortal Man. The story explains what happened to Arthur after the TV series ended.
Arthur Shelby’s status after the series
Arthur survived the TV run, which concluded in 2022. Paul Anderson was one of three actors to appear in every episode. Cillian Murphy and Sophie Rundle completed that trio.
How the film reveals his death
Early scenes show Tommy visiting Arthur’s grave. The headstone reads “In The Bleak Midwinter…” and lists December 1938 as the date of death.
The movie first hints at suicide or an accidental overdose. Later scenes make the circumstances more complex. Arthur appears only in flashbacks and memories.
Confessions and flashbacks
A Romani medium named Kaulo, played by Rebecca Ferguson, prompts Tommy to open up. She claims Arthur’s spirit told her he was not alone when he died.
Tommy first tells a version involving an argument, a stolen car, and a shot fired during a brawl. That account still leaves doubt about the full truth.
After visiting Ada’s corpse, Tommy admits the truth. He confesses he deliberately strangled Arthur in a rage. The film shows a flashback of the act, though Arthur’s face remains obscured.
Arthur’s presence in the film
Arthur’s influence is felt throughout the narrative. Tommy is haunted by guilt, PTSD, and recurring memories. One brief flashback shows Arthur sitting on rubble during Tommy’s tunnel sequence.
Paul Anderson’s response
Anderson addressed his character’s absence in a March interview with LADbible. He said he accepted the creative decision, despite initial reservations about making a film instead of more seasons.
He also praised the dramatic choice to remove Arthur in that way. Anderson suggested the exit felt powerful and suited the story.
