Louisville’s Mikel Brown Jr. Set to Return Against Michigan State?
Michigan State advanced to the second round with a 92-67 victory over North Dakota State in Buffalo. The Spartans will face Louisville on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. at KeyBank Center.
Mikel Brown Jr. ruled out for second-round game
Mikel Brown Jr. confirmed to Filmogaz.com that he will not play Saturday. He missed Louisville’s first-round game against South Florida with a persistent back injury.
Louisville had previously announced Brown would be unavailable for both tournament games this week. The guard said he is not physically able to perform at his usual level.
Impact on Louisville
Brown averages 18.2 points and 4.2 assists this season. He has missed more than a dozen games and sat out the last five contests.
Without Brown, Louisville managed an 83-79 first-round win over South Florida. The Cardinals committed 22 turnovers in that game, highlighting ball-handling concerns.
Contributors in Brown’s absence
Ryan Conwell has assumed more ball-handling responsibilities. He leads the team with 18.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.
Guard Isaac McKneely scored 23 points in the win. He said the team must reduce turnovers and praised the defensive effort on the glass.
Michigan State’s momentum
Jeremy Fears Jr. recorded 11 assists against North Dakota State. Nine of those assists came in the first half while facing constant double teams.
The Spartans improved to 26-7 and reached the second round for the fifth straight season. Michigan State also set a school NCAA Tournament assists mark with 26 helpers, surpassing a 1978 total.
Outlook for the matchup
Brown suggested he could be available later in the tournament if Louisville advances. He said a return might be possible for the Sweet Sixteen.
As of Friday, Michigan State was favored by 4.5 points. The injury to Brown leaves uncertainty about Louisville’s rotation and strategy against the Spartans.
