Simon Ehammer Shines with Personal Best at World Indoor Championships
Simon Ehammer delivered a powerful opening day at the World Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland. He improved his 60 m time and stretched his advantage in the long jump.
Fast start in the 60 metres
Ehammer ran 60 metres in 6.69 seconds. That time was a new personal best, three hundredths quicker than before.
Only five decathletes have ever posted faster indoor 60 m times. The 25-year-old from Appenzell set a clear early marker.
Long jump dominance
In his main event, Ehammer leapt 8.15 metres. That mark was more than half a metre ahead of the nearest rival.
The long jump performance gave him a sizable points cushion in the heptathlon standings. It underlined his status as a favorite for gold.
High jump and shot put
Ehammer cleared 2.05 metres in the high jump, narrowly missing higher bars. He also produced a shot put of almost 15 metres.
Those results rounded out a strong first day across multiple heptathlon disciplines.
Standings and rivals
U.S. athlete Kyle Garland sat 232 points behind after the opening events. Garland’s day included a 60 m in 6.93 and a long jump of 7.58 metres.
Ehammer now pursues the championship lead and a possible record challenge.
Records in sight
The European heptathlon record stands at 6,558 points. Norway’s Sander Skotheim set that mark in Apeldoorn a year ago.
Last year in Apeldoorn, Ehammer took silver with a Swiss record of 6,506 points. He is aiming to improve on that total here.
